Gasparilla Half Marathon

I WALKED this event - enjoyed every step!

This year's event had some significant changes, all for the better, and in my opinion was the best yet of the three I have participated in.  The wave process for the 5K was streamlined and worked much better.  The Half started in two waves, ten minutes apart and kept the course as evenly populated as possible.

The "pirates" were not en route this year handing out "booty" but were available at the Finish Line for photos.  This kept the course movement continual without interruption.  Water / Gatorade stops were liberal, as always, and well-manned by lots of friendly volunteers.  5 Hour Energy was NOT a sponsor this year, and as a result, the post race traffic in the tunnel (under the bridge) moved much more smoothly.

Publix, once again, outdid themselves with their support for this event. Their giveaways this year were boxed spaghetti, recipe card, sunglasses cover (nylon baggie style) and exercise towels.  Both runners and Expo vistors (even if not registered) were allowed to pick up these items at the entrance to the Expo.  Their generous support is one of the many reasons this is a favorite event for me.  Definitely in my top 3 as of this date!

The Half Marathon shirts were bright yellow, long sleeve with a ribbon style logo.  Definitely a keeper!
Looking forward to GDCA's 2014 event!

Gasparilla 5K

This is my third year participating in the Gasparilla Distance Classic events.  This series is in my top three overall favorite races / locations. The crowds are huge, the organization is superb and the 'bang for your buck' is right on target.

The 5K was a last minute decision. Literally.  I signed up within 60 seconds of the cutoff time for this race.  The series has four races; 5K, 8K, 15K and a Half Marathon.  I did the 5K on Saturday and the Half Marathon on Sunday.  I had previously registered for the Half as soon as signup opened - my second year for that distance.

The 5K had 11,631 persons with results.  This doesn't include the spectators, fans, volunteers and sponsors.  It is not a small event and this year's WAVE start was the best yet.  Gasparilla has been testing different methods to make the process easier for all and the 2013 setup is a winner!

There were lots of positive changes as well as a few "missing" elements. 5 Hour Energy was not a sponsor this year.  The "pirates" were NOT en route this year handing out 'booty'.  They were, however, available for photos at the Finish Line.  These changes more or less streamlined the course overall.  Subtracted / changed things that slowed down runners or overcrowded an area.  Nothing to complain about.

I liked this years shirt logo best but honestly thought the color combo of last years shirt was a much better shirt design.  The short sleeve shirts were bright orange (single color) this year and this style was used for both the 5K and the 15K. The design below:

The 8K shirts were the same style in white and could be purchased two weeks after the race in limited sizes (all three available in limited sizing after the event)

Publix once again proved to be the best of the best as far as sponsors go!  Their giveaways for 2013 were spaghetti noodles with recipe card, nylon sunglass holders (baggie style) and exercise towels.  Zephyrhills and Gatorade both sponsored and provided beverages, as well as Coca Cola post race.  Three beer vendors also sponsored and provided free drinks post race to all registered participants of legal age with bib tags.

I'm still working on a weight loss challenge, thus I walked both races. My timing has improved slightly since the last few races but is nowhere near my ultimate goal. I am content to walk and keep up the exercise for now. The 5K turned into 5 miles total as many of us parked a mile away utilizing the free metered parking and quicker departure choice. Weather was absolutely wonderful (low 80's on Saturday) for February, even if a bit hot for a race but the breeze kept it very comfortable.

Best of luck to Gasparilla for 2014 and much thanks for yet another spectacular event!
